More Welds from Last Week and This week so Far .

Some time being a welder does not involve welding . Pictured here are a whole lot of bushings that had to have the brass insert pressed in than bored Later I had to clean and pack them individually . time consuming to say the least .

I can never resist adding a photo of a piece in the lathe. The weld on the shaft is being turned down to size .

This is a jig I had to make in order to get (2) - 1/2 " cuts from a piece of super thin gauge Stainless steel tubing for an airplane exhaust header , the fit up was perfect when I was done !

This next set was another piece of marine equipment , so many gussets I almost cursed at the engineer ! ( Dave I love you )

Gussets !

The top brace was the only MIG welds on the whole piece and I did it begrudgingly as MIG welds are ugly and weak by comparison to a TIG weld !!

Yet more gussets - the ones on the angle were each hand shaped -

This last photo was repairing some teeth in the gear housing (which sucked) !

Ok that's it for now !!!

Some Of Fridays Welds

The first peace (stainless) was primarily fusion welded other than the tack welds . The pattern was achieved by "pulsing" the foot petal !

This is a camera mount thing made of Aluminum for a very interesting wildlife photographer , he was super fun to talk to !

A week well spend bending and fabricating !

This week for the most part was spent making hand rails for trains out east, lots of bending of stainless steel rod 90' than cutting than, fitting than, cutting than, fitting than, welding than, sanding .. phew

Last they are sent to the polishers and packaged than mailed !

4140 Steel weld job for Friday !

Pre heat and weld took 2.7 hours total . These weighed around 700 Lbs each and were very hard to move about to get a good spot on the lower weld !

In the lathe being finished to fit the new gear cog.

The new cog in place (heated than press fit )

 The upper weld ,

this piece is smoking hot as it was pre heated and a inter-pass temp of around 600 Degrees had to be maintained.
The lower weld was hell on the fingers , I had stands to prop on and heat shields on every finger yet still toasted my left glove , wow HOT HOT HOT !!!

4140 is not a tool steel , technically it is a chrom-molly alloy. What happens if it is cooled to rapidly ? It enters the martensitic  phase - refer to metallurgy .

What was not done properly during this weld adventure was no one in the shop knew the proper weld procedure for the parts . I pre-heated them to about 350 - 400 degrees F. using a gas torch than , welded the pieces in place using ER 70-2 filler metal while maintaining an inter-pass temp of around 600 degrees F. Than, when finished quickly covered the welded piece in a heat blanket to allow to cool as slowly as time would allow !

This helped to avoid cracking due to hydrogen embrittelment . Overall the welds turned out great !

These were all multi-pass welds , the upper (top) was 3 passes , the lower was 2 .

HAPPY WELDING !!!!

Yet more work photos - keeping busy -

So while I was away from the blog I have purchased a Flex-Loc torch body which has quickly become my default torch at home in the shop. I bought both the series 9 and series 2 torch heads in the air/gas cooled model, it is super awesome !!!!

The rest are some photos of recent jobs , they come in so fast it is hard to photo them all !

             HAPPY WELDING !!!!!!!!
