HAPPY WELDING...

6061 Aluminum

A few jobs have come up in recent weeks where people have asked me to weld/repair structural aluminum parts made of 6061 aluminum which I had to decline due to my fear of removing the temper and putting them at a higher risk of mechanical failure due to the repair.

6061 has various states of temper rated in Pascal Units -0  T4  and T6 each representing a different metallurgical set of properties.

6061 is very weldable however by welding any temper is removed and the part must be heat treated to the correct the temper and restore it's mechanical properties.

6061 has approximately 30% of it's strength post weld. These are my thoughts for the day.

HAPPY WELDING !!!!
